SYPRO GYRAHow many bands in instrumental jazz or any music, for that matter, can boast a 40-year career, gaining and keeping fans over almost four decades? Born in Brooklyn, bandleader Jay Beckenstein grew up listening to the music of Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins and Dizzy Gillespie, and started playing the saxophone at the age seven. Beckenstein attended the University of Buffalo, New York, the pop charts included names like Lynyrd Skynrd, the Carenters, Bob Marley & the Waliers and Pink Floyd. Theirs is an unlikely story of a group with humble beginnings, who has continued to reach an intrnational audience for over forty years, resulting in sales of over 10 million albums and having played over five thousand shows on five continents. The band also achieved one RIAA-certified Platinum and two gold albums. SpyroGyra shows no sign of slowing down, having garnered Grammy nominations for four consective albums in the last ten years.
DAVID BENOITComposer, Conductor and pianist, David Benoit, a five time Grammy nominee for his extraordinary and seminal contributions to contemporary jazz, began his career as a pianist in 1977 and includes 23 solo recordings over the past 25 years. His career has led to guest pianist and conductor spots with numerous top symphonies and philharmonics and four performances at Carnegie Hall (including one with Maestro Leonard Bernstein). Benoit has performed at the White House for three U.S. Presidents: Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan and George Bush, Sr. and lent his conducting talents and legendary piano performance skills to notable film scores such as The Stars Fell on Henrietta, produced by Clint Eastwood and starring Robert Duval; and The Christmas Tree, produced by Sally Field. Benoit has also arranged, conducted and performed music for many popular pop and jazz artists over the years, including the Rippingtons, Kenny Loggins, Patti Austin, Dave Koz, Kenny Rankin, Faith Hill, David Lanz, Cece Winans, David Pack, David Sanvorn, The Walt Disney Organization and Brian McKnight.
