Life's a game at Senior Expo

The 26th annual Senior Expo presented Oct. 20 by High Desert Medical Group and Heritage Health Care will have game show host Peter Marshall as its celebrity guest, with its theme "The Game of Life."

Senior Expo, the inspiration of High Desert founder Dr. Richard Merkin, offers entertainment, giveaways, free bingo, free health screenings and seasonal flu shots for seniors age 62 and over from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds, 2551 West Ave. H. Parking and admission are free.

Health screenings will include bone density, DermaScan, cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure checks.

An event highlight at 11 a.m. will be the naming of the Senior of the Year, co-sponsored by the Antelope Valley Press. Also, in partnership with the office of Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, the fourth Veteran's Community Service Award will be presented to an individual or organization that makes a difference in the lives of veterans.

With almost 50 television, movie and Broadway credits, Marshall is best known as the original host of "The Hollywood Squares" from 1966 to 1981. Marshall was host to celebrity panelists including comic Morey Amsterdam and his Dick Van Dyke Show co-star Rose Marie, as well as Paul Lynde, Jan Murray and Wally Cox. In 2007, Marshall was one of the first inductees into the American TV Game Show Hall of Fame in Las Vegas. In 2009, Marshall hosted a two-hour PBS special, "The Big Band Years." In 2010, Marshall, along with Monty Hall and Wink Martindale, appeared with their wives on a special "Game Show Legend" version of "The Newlywed Game."

At the Senior Expo, Marshall will be host of "Let's Make A Deal" with the audience; seniors will have the opportunity to win prizes. Attendees are encouraged to come dressed in costumes, which increases their chance to be selected to participate. Marshall will ask the audience to provide various items such as a Band-aid, Q-Tip, safety pin or handkerchief for a chance to "make a deal." As on the television game show, players will be offered a chance to trade their winnings for a chance to ultimately play for the grand prize behind doors 1, 2 or 3.

The expo features more than 100 vendor booths that offer useful information, products and services. Health plan sales representatives will be available in the H.W. Hunter Pavilion with 2017 benefit options and enrollment information.

Lunch will be provided in the courtyard between the H.W. Hunter and Van Dam Pavilions, between the hours of 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., for seniors age 62 and above, courtesy of BeX Grill and the City of Lancaster. For all other attendees, Friends of the Fair will offer a variety of food.

Free shuttle services will be provided, courtesy of Antelope Ambulance, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. between the Antelope Valley Transit Authority bus stop on Avenue H and the expo doors.

Those who bring a canned food item to donate to Grace Resource Center, a local food bank and community shelter, will be entered into a drawing to win a $100 gift card courtesy of Antelope Valley Mall.
